Safeguarding Children and Young People from Sexual Exploitation

Target Audience

Universal: keeping children and young people safe is everyone's business. This course should be attended by all those who are in working, or in contact with children, young people and families with particular focus and consideration being placed on older children, young people, adolescents and teenagers.

Child sexual exploitation is child abuse ("child" being defined as anyone under 18 years of age). It is complex and can manifest itself in different ways."For children over 10, sexual exploitation is the most pressing and hidden child protection issue in this country."(Anne Marie Carrie, Barnardo's)

Course aims and Objectives

In line with the 2012 National Action Plan this course aims to:

  • Raise awareness of Child sexual Exploitation
  • Support the early recognition, vulnerability, warning signs, and associated factors of young people at risk of, or are being sexually exploited
  • Increase knowledge of offences relating to sexual exploitation and grooming
  • Explore some of the strategies and avenues used by perpetrators to target children for purpose of sexual exploitation
  • Understand the grooming process specific to CSE
  • The importance of gathering, recording, retaining information, and appropriate sharing of information as a best practice approach to prevent CSE.
  • Explore some of the dilemmas faced by professionals working with young people who may be at risk or involved in sexual exploitation
  • Gain knowledge of local and national guidance, referral pathways and services relating to CSE.
