Engaging Families, Working with Resistance

This course is aimed at those who work directly on interventions with families, carrying out assessments or contributing to an assessments. Pre-requisite is attendance on Understanding Wolverhampton Threshold to Support amd Early Help Assessment and experience of working with families in need of support/intervention.

This course aims to increase confidence in engaging families, enhancing skills to identify and assess resistance and provide a range of practical approaches. Current practice and learning is informed by recent and historical local SCR's

Learning Objectives

participants will be able to

  • identify barriers to engagement
  • recognise and describe types of resistance, uncooperativeness and hosility
  • list reasons why families may be uncooperative, resistant or hoatile
  • describe the impact of the familie behaviour on the assessment of the child
  • discuss the impact on multi-agency working
  • examine appropriate responses and tools to work with, including keeping yourself safe and managing risk
